What exactly is it about Provence that draws people like a siren's call? Is it the colors: the impossibly perfect bright blue of the cloudless sky; the sea of yellow heads tilted toward the sun in the sunflower fields; the periwinkle of the mounds and mounds of lavender; the silvery green of the olive trees? Or is it the views of hills and mountains studded with neat rows of vineyards? Or perhaps it is the impossibly charming little towns, paved with centuries old stone, each with its town square, fountain and market day. Oh and let's not forget about the food! Don't get me started on that as I am on day 2 of the Whole 30 diet and it would not be good to begin the day thinking about the food!
I love Provence. Everything about it. I haven't been there in years but thanks to Instagram and a new company called Chez Pluie, an importer of Provencal antiques, I almost feel as if I can go there whenever I want. Looking at these photos, it occurred to me that I can bring a bit of le style provençal into my home. Here are 5 ways to steal some French style and bring it home.
1. Plant nothing but lavender in my pots!
(On second thought, I think I will also add some boxwood balls...)
2. Buy some interesting pots and create a sculptural vignette in the garden.
I have been enamored of modern square zinc planters for a few years but look at these gorgeous old pots- they make me want to change everything. What a beautiful sculptural element in a garden!
3. Make dining outdoors a celebration.
Dining "en plein aire" is one of the simple joys of life in Provence and the French really know how to make an event of it. Note to self, bring out the white linens for my next dinner on the patio...
A table can be set up under the shade of any large tree and outdoor furniture can be anything you can drag outside.
Of course, a view like this doesn't hurt!
4. Patina belongs in every room.
Don't worry if the finish isn't perfect. Embrace the patina! It really amps up the charm factor. Imperfect is perfect.
5. Elevate the bath.
Gild mirror, crystal chandelier, fresh flowers... this takes bathing to another level. Stu, we need to make some changes to our bathroom!
I could go on and on but have to pull myself back to reality. The dog needs to be fed and its time to get to work. Follow @Chezpluie on Instagram to see more stunningly beautiful photos and be inspired to incorporate some french charm into your home.
