Can you Love a Color Forever?

Sometimes you fall in love with a color.  At first you love everything about it. It makes you happy and you feel good whenever you gaze at it. But then something changes and you start noticing things. Like it doesn't look so good in different lighting. Or it is too trendy and you feel a little foolish bringing it home.  You even may cringe looking back at old photos of it.  But, if you are really lucky, you fall in love with the right shade from the get go and the love affair lasts decades.  Maybe even a lifetime. I wonder if there is such a thing as a color soul mate?

My daughter, Charlotte, fell for a particular shade of blue when she was just 9 years old and she will be celebrating her 22nd birthday this week and the love affair is still going strong.  We have lived in 4 homes since she was 9 and each time she wanted her bedroom to be painted the same shade of Farrow and Ball blue and she has kept the same bedding all these years.  She will be moving into her first apartment in San Francisco in August and I wonder if she will want to paint her bedroom walls there this same color?

Charlotte describes this color as heavenly and it is calming and soothing to her.  So what, you ask, is this amazingly perfect shade of blue?  Drum roll please........

It looks less gray when it's up on the walls.  That is the thing with blues.  You should go grayer than you think you want in order to avoid a sickly sweet baby blue shade.  For Charlotte, I have always used it with lots of white and touches of yellow or light green but it would be beautiful with navy, red, orange and chocolate.

When she was a little girl, she picked a rather sophisticated paisley print for her bedding from House Inc.  We had pillows, shams and a bedskirt  made in two different stripes.  They have faded over the years but the style is classic so it still looks pretty:

Here is how her bedroom has looked in various houses over the years:

I think that Skylight will always be a part of Charlotte's life.  Isn't it wonderful to have found that perfect color at such a young age?  Have you found your color soul mate?

Happy Friday!
