A client recently asked me to select a breakfast room table and chairs for their second home, a beautiful villa in Pawleys Island. I furnished and decorated the rest of the home for them last year and this is the last area to be tackled. This got me thinking about breakfast rooms and what is the perfect breakfast room. Are there certain elements that must be present in order to make the start of the day wonderful?
A large window (or 2 or three) is critical for a successful breakfast room. Nothing feels as good as natural light first thing in the morning. A view of a pretty garden or fountain outside is a definite plus. Think about installing a bird feeder somewhere within view also. A beautiful chandelier or pendant adds atmosphere and soft lighting on pre dawn mornings or rainy day breakfasts.
Soft Cozy Seating
I prefer a soft chair to ease into my day in the morning. Even better is a small upholstered settee or banquette- a place for the dog to snuggle in next to me as I read and sip my coffee. In fact, I think of the breakfast area as a bridge between the living and dining rooms. It should be a place where you want to hang out while you have breakfast.
If you don't have room for a settee or you want to float your table in the center of the room, try using 4 upholstered armchairs. Just be sure that the table is the correct height to comfortably sit at for dining.
Beautiful, Durable Table
The table is the centerpiece of the space and it should be something that you don't need to worry about marking. I love to use an antique table that already has the patina from years of coffee cups, plates and juice glasses resting on it. Or, if marks bother you, glass, metal or stone topped tables work well in a breakfast room. Here are some of my favorites:
Have a great day!
