A Return to Gentility- At Least At The Table!

Does anyone else feel like they are constantly rushing around?  Or is it just me?  It's tough coming back from a week away because there is all the work from the previous week left to add to this week's, but it feels good to be back.  Amongst all of the ideas swirling around in my mind is one that I want to explore a little bit today.  The idea of gentility is one that I have been thinking about a lot lately.  Perhaps it is because I was just in South Beach where people walk around the city streets in bikinis practically naked, or maybe it is because of the base level of speech some of the politicians have stooped to, but I find myself longing for a return of gentility in our lives.

Gentility is defined as elegance by virtue of fineness of manner and expression. Have we lost this quality in our lives?  I think that it is a question worth considering and I wonder how I can bring some of this back in my own life.  I am not suggesting a return to the days of yore (!) but rather am wondering what is worth bringing back into our fast paced 21st century egalitarian world.

One of the things that I think is worth bringing back is elegant place settings and a proper meal time without tv or cell phones.  An hour at the end of the day set aside for nourishment of the body, relationships and the senses.  I realize how difficult this will be given the fact that I rarely get home before 6pm but I am going to make an effort.  Stu, are you reading this?  Now I have declared myself and I am on the hook!

In order to motivate me to follow through, I am looking to inspiration from some gorgeous tables. Setting a lovely table is part of the ritual that makes dining an experience that is more than just filling the stomach.

Fresh wildflowers in simple glass bottles are beautiful and easy.  Drag out a table into the garden on a beautiful summer evening and enjoy these first warm sunny evenings.

Driftwood is beautiful on a table combined with small arrangements of flowers of differing heights interspersed in the curves of the wood.

I love the simplicity and elegance of this table.  The succulents paired with all white makes me sigh.

For a meal on the porch, I love the idea of using a quilt as a tablecloth.  Also, use the good silver and china.  Mix it with the everyday dishes.
